Ford Motor Company, also known as Ford, is an American multinational carmaker that has its main offices in Dearborn, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. It was established by Henry Ford and incorporated in 1903. The company markets vehicles and commercial cars under the Ford brand, and most luxury vehicles under the Lincoln nameplate. Ford also owns Brazilian SUV maker Troller, an 8% stake in Aston Martin of the United Kingdom. The company is registered on the New York Stock Exchange and is managed by the Ford family; they have minority possession but the bulk of the voting power.

Ford's previous UK subsidiaries Jaguar and Land Rover, obtained in 1989 and 2000 each, were sold to the Indian carmaker Tata Motors in March 2008. Ford had the Swedish maker Volvo from 1999 to 2010. In 2011, Ford abandoned the Mercury brand, under which it had sold entry-level luxury vehicles in North America, and the Middle East since 1938.

Ford is the second-largest U.S.-based carmaker (behind G.M.) and the fifth-largest in the world (following Toyota, VW, Hyundai-Kia, and G.M.) based on 2015 car production. At the end of 2010, Ford was the fifth-biggest carmaker in Europe.

The business went public in 1956 but the Ford family, through special Class B shares, still holds 40 percent voting claims. Throughout the economic crisis at the start of the 21st century, it was close to insolvency, but it has since recovered to profitability.
