Hummer was a brand of trucks and SUVs, originally sold in 1992 when AM General started marketing a civilian variant of the M998 Humvee. In 1998, General Motors acquired the brand name from AM General and sold three vehicles: the initial Hummer H1, based on the military Humvee, as well as the new H2 and H3 variants that were based on smaller GM platforms.

In 2008, Hummer's viability in the financial crisis was being asked, and it was put under review by GM executives. Rather than being assigned to the Motors Liquidation Company as part of the GM insolvency in 2009, the brand was held by GM, in order to examine its sale.

Although the carmaker stated two days later that it had been proposed with new proposals, by April 2010, any sale became questionable, as inventory was depleted and Hummer dealerships began closing down.

The maker of the Hummer H1 and H2, AM General, lost their effort to create the HMMWV's substitute for the U.S. military in 2015, to Oshkosh Corporation.
