Kia Motors Corporation, usually known as Kia Motors is a South Korean multinational carmaker headquartered in Seoul. It is South Korea's second-largest automobile producer after the Hyundai Motor Company, with sales of over 3.3 million cars in 2015.
Since December 2015, Kia Motor is a minority-owned by Hyundai, which owns a 33% stake estimated at just over US$6 billion. In turn, Kia is a minority owner of more than twenty Hyundai subsidiaries varying from 4.9% up to 45.37%, figuring more than US$8.3 billion.
According to Kia Motors, the title "Kia" stems from the Sino-Korean characters "ki" ("to arise") and "a" (which stands for East Asia); it is approximately interpreted as "Rising from the East."
