Model overview
The Toyota Crown is a line of full-size luxury sedans by Toyota primarily aimed at the Japanese market. It has a long history dating back to 1955 and has gone through numerous generations, each incorporating advanced technology and luxurious features.
In North America, the first four generations were offered from 1958 through 1972, being substituted by the Corona Mark II. The Crown nameplate returned to the North American market in 2022, when the sixteenth-generation model was released. The Crown has also been partially succeeded in export markets by its closely related sibling, the Lexus GS.
The Toyota Crown is available in various trims, including the Royal, Majesta, Athlete, and Hybrid models. Each trim offers different features and options to cater to various customer preferences. All Crown models have a hybrid powertrain, but only the top-spec Platinum model pairs a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder with an electric motor to produce 340 horsepower. The XLE, Limited, and Nightshade models get a less powerful 236-hp hybrid system that employs a 2.5-liter four-cylinder and three electric motors. The XLE, Limited, and Nightshade are paired with variable automatic transmission (CVT), while the Platinum uses a six-speed automatic; all-wheel drive is by default on every trim.
