BMW Z4 specs
Model overview
The BMW Z4 is a rear-wheel-drive sports car produced by the German maker BMW. Belongs to BMW line of roadsters such as the BMW Z1, BMW 507, BMW Z8, and the BMW Z3. The Z4 substitutes the Z3. The production of the first generation started in 2002 at a factory in Greer, South Carolina.
The BMW Z models have been produced in four different series with six generations consisting of a roadster, coupé, sports car, and concept models.
The release of the M Coupé and M Roadster in the Z3 line marked the Z series to have a high-performance BMW M alternative. The first generation Z4 also continued to offer M Coupé and M Roadster while the current Z4 (G29) uses BMW's platform shared with the current Toyota Supra.
The new BMW Z4 models have an eight-speed automatic transmission with Sport mode and Manual mode. The sDrive30i is fueled by an excellent turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine delivering 255 horsepower, accelerating to 60 mph in 5.1 seconds. The new 2020 BMW Z4 M40i is equipped with a 382-hp twin-turbocharged inline-six engine, reaching a zero-to-60-mph time of just 3.8 seconds.
BMW Z4 known problems
- On models from the second generation, there are known issues with a badly designed rear bumper vent causing the water to leak into the boot and could potentially destroy some of the various electric modules that are located in the boot.
- Engine misfire when the engine is idling caused by a faulty DISA valve. You may also hear a rattling sound arising from the engine.
- Rattling sound arising from underneath the car when driving over rough surfaces, or speed bumps caused by a weak flap in the rear section of the exhaust.
- The second-generation (2009-present) Roadster, has the folding roof mechanism stored in the boot. This mechanism has a synthetic molding, which is quickly damaged if there is anything left in the boot when attempting to fold down the roof. The most possible damage will be a crack in this molding.
