Model overview
The Lexus LS is a full-size luxury sedan sold by Lexus, the luxury division of Toyota. The first generation of LS models highlighted V8 engines with rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive, hybrid, and long-wheelbase models. The fifth-generation switched to using V6 powertrains with no V8 option, and only with one available length.
The initial model designed by Lexus, the LS 400 was launched in January 1989 while the second generation in November 1994. Presently the LS is built across five generations.
Each generation of the Lexus LS has been produced since the beginning in the Japanese city of Tahara, Aichi. The name "LS" comes from "Luxury Sedan", although it can also refer to "Luxury Saloon".
The standard powertrain in the LS is a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V-6 engine that produces 416 horsepower and paired to a 10-speed automatic transmission controlled by a leather-wrapped knob on the center console. The models badged LS500h highlight a hybrid engine that uses a 3.5-liter V-6 and two electric motors to make 354 horsepower.
