Model overview
The BMW 1 Series is a series of subcompact premium automobiles produced by BMW as 2004. It is the follower of the BMW 3 Series Compact and is presently in its third generation.
The initial generation was offered in hatchback, coupe, and convertible body forms. As the second generation, launched in 2013, the coupé and convertible forms have been sold as the 2 Series, hence the 1 Series series no longer covers these body styles.
The 1 Series is BMW's entry-level of the model range. Oddly for a small vehicle, the 1 Series series is often rear-wheel drive with optional all-wheel drive being possible on some versions. An M version was designed for the prime generation: the BMW 1 Series M Coupe, which was replaced by the BMW M2.
The BMW 1 Series is available in 128i, 135i and 135is configurations. The rear-wheel-drive BMW 1 Series allows a choice of three separate 3.0-liter inline-6 engines. The naturally aspirated 128i rated 230 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is a standard while a six-speed automatic transmission is optional.
