Subaru produced a badge engineered variant of the second generation Impreza hatchback, sold by Saab as the "Saab 9-2X" in the North American market for model years, 2005 through 2006. At the time, Saab Automobile had been owned by General Motors with 20 percent held stake of Subaru's mother company, Fuji Heavy Industries.

Saab redesigned the front- and rear design to incorporate the vehicle with the brand design language. Modification included updated front fascia, fenders, tailgate, hood, and rear fascia. Most of the interior of the 9-2X was the same as the Impreza wagon.

The Saab 9-2X comes as a four-door wagon solely in two trims, 2.5i and Aero. The base 2.5i trim is powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 173 horsepower and 166 lb-ft. The Aero model gets a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine that produces 230 hp and 235 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed manual transmission comes by default on both the 2.5i and Aero, while a four-speed automatic is optional. All-wheel drive is by default on both trims.

Some of the common problems or complaints owners have about the Saab 9 2x are:

• Both manual transmissions and the four-speed automatics have issues
• Like the Impreza on which the vehicle is based on, is prone to rust on the rear three quarter panels
• A distinct raw fuel smell can be scented inside the car over very cold days
