Model overview

The Nissan Leaf, stylized by maker Nissan as LEAF, is a compact five-door hatchback battery-electric car, launched in Japan and the United States in 2010 across two generations.

Amongst other prizes and attention, the Leaf has won the 2010 Green Car Vision Award, the 2011 World Car of the Year, the 2011 European Car of the Year, and the 2011–2012 Car of the Year Japan.

In December 2019 total sales reached 450,000. The United States is its biggest market, with over 126,000 units sold through 2018. It's followed by Japan with 100,000 units and Europe with 100,000 by 2018. 

The Leaf classified as the world's top-selling plug-in electric vehicle through December 2019. The Tesla Model 3 exceeded the Leaf in spring 2020 to become the new all-time best selling electric vehicle, with more than 500,000 units by March 2020.

The Leaf comes equipped with a 110-kW electric motor that delivers 147 horsepower to the front wheels; a 40-kWh battery pack gives the power. Leaf Plus variants come powered by a 214-hp 160-kW electric motor and a larger 62-kWh battery. The former achieved a 7.4-second zero-to-60-mph.
