Model overview

The Ford F-Series Super Duty is a range of trucks produced by Ford Motor Company. Launched in 1998 for the 1999 model year, they marked the addition of the new heavy-duty F-250, F-350, and F-450 pickups, while the previous F-Super Duty chassis cabs were followed by the F-450 chassis cab and F-550 Super Duty.

The Super Duty trucks use a different chassis from the lighter F-150 to allow for higher payload and towing capabilities.

Ford F-250 to F-550 Super Duty trucks are produced in Kentucky, while the F-650 and F-750s are produced in Ohio. Since 2016, the Ford Super Duty is sold in North America, South America, Angola, Cambodia, the Middle East, and Iceland.

The F-250 and F-350 are equipped with a standard gasoline 6.2-liter V-8 engine that produces 385 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque. The six-speed automatic is the base transmission, while the 10-speed automatic gearbox is optional. All versions pair with either rear or four-wheel drive and can be equipped with more powerful powertrains. These include the gas-fed 7.3-liter V-8 engine that produces 430 horses and 475 lb-ft and the Power Stroke diesel 6.7-liter V-8 delivering 475 horses and 1050 lb-ft of torque.

Ford F-250 known problems

• Both the F-250 and F-350 Super Duty models have exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valves that can leak coolant causing white smoke from the tailpipe. A broken defective thermostat bypass is also another coolant leak source causing the radiator to fail.
• The Super Duty diesel powertrains are predisposed to liner pitting if the cooling system is badly maintained. During cavitation, air bubbles or ice forms on the engine’s water pump producing corrosion.
• The ejection of a spark plug creates damage to threads in the spark plug hole causing increased oil consumption and other engine repairs.
• Engine lack of power may arise from a loose hose of the turbocharger to the intake manifold. One sign of the imminent loss of power is a soft tapping noise from the engine that alerts of possible serious internal engine failure.
• Delamination comes from the fuel pump being clogged by small metal and liner chips from the tank which chokes the engine and reduces its power.
• The steering wheel vibrates when braking which is caused by warped rotors. This happens when the brake pad material is exposed to highly heated rotors after a sudden stop and ends in rough places on the rotor's surface.
