Model overview

The Ford Expedition is a full-size four-door body SUV produced by Ford and launched for the 1997 model year as the replacement of the Ford Bronco. The Ford Expedition has been descended from the similar generation of the Ford F-150, sharing some body and mechanical parts. 

Ford Expedition has a similar configuration to the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban, being marketed in regular and extended versions (the Ford Expedition EL/Max). 

The Expedition is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V-6 engine paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission in rear or all-wheel drive. The XLT and Limited versions have a 375-hp version of the V-6 engine, and the top Platinum models it's tuned for 400 hp.

Ford Expedition known problems

• A potential ejection of the spark plug from the cylinder head, a common problem causing the engine to tap or knock sounds and start to misfire. The check engine warning light will illuminate.
• The ignition coil breaks due to the extreme spark plug gap causing the check engine warning light to light up. The issue affects a number of model years, from 1997 to 2011.
• The check engine light comes on after hesitates to accelerate or stalling produced by the failure of the mass airflow sensor (MAF), which needs to be changed. This issue is affecting the Triton V8 engine model years 1997 through 2014. 
• A rough idle generated by the EGR sensor sticking making the EGR valve to remain open a bit. Both the EGR valve and sensor need to be changed. This issue is affecting some models from years from 1997 through 2007 plus 2012 and 2017.
