Model overview

The Chevrolet Silverado, and its identical twin the GMC Sierra, are a range of full-size and heavy-duty pickup trucks produced by General Motors and launched in 1998 as the replacement to the Chevrolet C/K line. The name Silverado was taken from a trim level earlier used on the Chevrolet C/K pickup truck within 1975-1998. GM continues to offer a GMC-badged alternative of the Chevrolet full-size pickup truck under the GMC Sierra name, launched for the first time in 1987.

The Silverado is one of the best-selling truck in the United States, with total sales of 12 million since its launch.

The new model of Silverado is equipped with a range of engines, including a V-6, two V-8s, a turbocharged four-cylinder, and a diesel inline-six. The 420-hp 6.2-liter engine is powering the Silverado to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds while the smaller 355-hp 5.3-liter engine in 6.1 seconds. The 310-hp turbocharged 2.7-liter four-cylinder engine required 7.0 seconds to reach 60 mph.

Chevrolet Silverado known problems

Some of the common problems or complaints owners have about the Chevrolet Silverado are:
  • One of the most common issues the 2007-2013 GMC and Chevy owners experience is extreme oil consumption. This problem caused buyers to launch a class-action lawsuit against GM, which declared 2010-2013 models with Generation IV 5.3 Liter V8 Vortec 5300 engines were inadequate. The lawsuit alleged the active fuel management (AFM) system, piston rings, and PVC system to produce excessive oil consumption.
  • Another frequently reported problem is related to the Chevrolet and GMC Sierra door speakers go out. They usually quit working one at a time over some months, but occasionally kickback they start working again. The problem seems to be caused by moisture that gets into the doors.
  • The 4WD case encoder motion position sensor and the selector switch are known to fail, usually at around 150,000 miles displaying a service 4WD message. According to reports from owners, this is one of the most common issues with the 2008 Chevy Silverado.
  • Another problem with 2007-2013 Silverados and Sierras is that the fuel level sensor stops running or working inconsistently after approximately 120,000 miles.
  • The 1999-2007 Silverados and Sierras rusted-out brake lines can cause the brakes to fail, after 100,000 miles. To fix this issue, the rusted brakes need to be replaced. When substituting a brake line, it’s recommended to check the others as well.
