Model overview

The BMW 6 Series is a group of grand tourers built by BMW as 1976. It is the replacement to the E9 Coupé and is presently in its fourth generation.

The initial generation BMW E24 6 Series was available only as a two-door coupé and manufactured from 1976 until 1989. The second generation debuted in 2004 as the BMW E63/E64 6 Series. The third generation F06/F12/F13 6 Series was launched in 2011 as a coupé and convertible. 

When the third generation ceased making, the coupé and convertible variants have been converted into the BMW 8 Series (G15) nameplate. The fourth-generation 6 Series, also knows as the G32 6 Series, was introduced in mid-2017 and is available solely as a fastback body style to complement the BMW 5 Series sedan/wagon.

The BMW 6 Series is available in 640i and 650i trims. Some variations exist within the two (the sound system, wheel size), but the trims primarily indicate the type of the engine. The 640i is powered by a six-cylinder turbocharged 3.0-liter engine producing 315 horsepower and 332 pound-feet of torque. On the other hand, the 650i is equipped with a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 (445 hp, 480 lb-ft of torque). Rear-wheel drive, which BMW names sDrive, is by default, and all-wheel drive (xDrive) is optional.

Some of the common problems or complaints owners have about the BMW 6 Series are:

• Air conditioning condenser prone to fail
• Electrical issues; pay attention to any warning light indication on the dashboard to avoid paying high bills
• Water pump electrical short circuit 
• Crankshaft sensor
• Crankcase bearing bushing
• Front seats
