Model overview

The BMW 5 Series is an executive vehicle produced by BMW since 1972 and it is the replacement to the New Class Sedans, currently in its seventh generation.

Originally, the 5 Series was only available for the sedan model, but in time other styles were added to the list, the wagon/estate body style (knows as "Touring") and the 5-door fastback (named "Gran Turismo").

The initial generation of 5 Series was equipped by naturally aspirated four-cylinder and six-cylinder petrol engines. The next generations have been equipped by four-cylinder, six-cylinder, V8, and V10 engines, either naturally aspirated or turbocharged. Diesel engines have been included in 1982 to the 5 Series series.

The BMW 5 Series is the next best-selling model after the 3 Series with total sales on January 29, 2008, of over the 5 million. The 5 Series was the original model that began using the three-digit model naming convention of BMW.

Following the E28, all generations of 5 Series variants have also included a sport "M" model, named the BMW M5.

BMW 5 Series known problems

Some of the common problems or complaints about the BMW 5 Series are:
  • Some owners have reported water leaking into the boot area caused by blocked sunroof drains or boot seals. The electronic control module can be damaged because of this water leak.
  • The touring models of the 5 Series have known problems with the rear wiper spindle failing. If the rear wipers are not working correctly, then a quick investigation of the spindle is recommended to avoid the wiper mechanism failure.
  • The thermostat is known for breaking, making the engine to overheat and producing damage to other engine components, becoming a very expensive repair.
  • Strange noises can be heard coming from the steering wheel, particularly when driving at low speed caused by a problem with a loss of lubrication on the steering rack.
  • Another problem is related to the fan speed suddenly change caused most likely by the blower motor resistor.
